Deepin 20.2.2 Update: Android App Support, Secure Boot & More!

Attention all Linux enthusiasts and Deepin users, get ready for an exciting new update because Deepin 20.2.2 is here! This update brings a plethora of features and improvements, making Deepin one of the most robust and secure distributions out there. But the biggest highlight? Android app support—making it the first Chinese Linux distro to offer this feature.

Unleashing the Power of Android on Deepin

Deepin 20.2.2’s biggest announcement is the inclusion of Android app support. While this feature has been available on systems like Chrome OS and Windows 11, Deepin is now entering the game.

The exact mechanism of how Android apps will run on Deepin is still a mystery, but it is expected to be similar to Anbox, a project that lets users run Android apps on their desktop PCs. Please note that this feature is currently only supported with Linux Kernel 5.10 LTS, and users opting for Linux Kernel 5.12 will have to wait for container support.

With this new update, Deepin users can now access a vast library of apps from the Android platform, greatly expanding their software options.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the available Android apps may be limited to those commonly used by Chinese users. Our efforts to explore the Chinese language settings were futile, as the App Store was displayed entirely in Chinese even with English set as the system language.

New and Improved App Store

Deepin already had a graphical app store to manage apps, but with the 20.2.2 update, the Deepin App Store has been upgraded with some fantastic features that enhance user experience.

These include batch installation, optimized content layout, and improved categories and rankings based on ratings, downloads, and updated time. All of these come together to provide a smoother and more intuitive app browsing experience, similar to what we are familiar with on macOS, iOS, and Android.

Enhanced Security and Authentication Features

The Deepin team has taken significant steps towards improving security with the 20.2.2 update. Firstly, Deepin is the first Chinese Linux distro to receive a secure boot certificate, adding an extra layer of protection to the already secure Linux kernel.

In terms of authentication, biometric login is now available in Deepin for both the lock screen and control center, making it easier and more convenient for users to access their system. This feature, popularized by systems like Windows Hello and Touch ID, has been slow to make its way to Linux desktop environments, but with Deepin’s update, it’s finally here.

Updated Dual-Kernel Feature

The Deepin 20.2.2 update also brings in an update to the dual-kernel feature introduced in the 20.x series. The stable kernel is now Linux 5.12, and the Linux Kernel 5.10 LTS, providing improved stability and compatibility, especially for newer hardware. Dual kernels can also be manually installed and updated, giving users more flexibility and control.
